We’re thrilled to share that our founder, Callum Beaumont, was recently featured in Splash247, one of the shipping industry’s leading media publishers, discussing his new book, The Modern Shipbroker: How to Build a Successful Career in a Changing Industry.
In the piece, Callum talks about why shipbroking remains a compelling career choice, even as the tools and skills required to succeed continue to shift. He’s optimistic about where the profession is headed, noting that shipping is still a relationship driven industry and that technology isn’t about to replace the value of a good broker anytime soon.
What has changed, he explains, is the sheer volume of data and digital tools now available. The brokers who come out ahead will be the ones who can use technology to work faster and make sharper decisions, while still leaning on the human skills that no algorithm can replicate: judgement, negotiation, trust, and relationships.
Callum also weighs in on AI’s role in the industry. Rather than replacing brokers, he sees it creating a divide between those who learn to use it well and those who don’t.
The Modern Shipbroker is the follow-up to Callum’s 2020 book, The Essential Guide to Becoming a Shipbroker, which focused on helping graduates land their first role. This new guide goes further, covering what the job actually looks like day to day, how to build a lasting career, and where AI and adjacent maritime sectors fit into the picture.
One theme that comes through clearly in the interview is Callum’s drive to widen the pipeline into shipbroking. Too many people still find their way into the industry through family connections or existing networks, and he’d like to see that change by getting in front of a broader range of students and talking openly about global trade, negotiation, technology, and relationship building.
It’s a milestone that reflects the years Callum has spent in the industry, from his early days on a broking desk through to founding Cordell Beaumont in 2019, and it’s a proud moment for our whole team.
